Programmed Logic Announces DTFS 2.2

for UnixWare 2.0

Doubles the Capacity of a UNIX System

8 February, 1996 (Somerset, NJ) - Programmed Logic Corporation (PLC) announced today the availabilty of DTFS 2.2 for UnixWare 2.0. DTFS, the DeskTop File System, employs transparent data compression to double the capacity of a UNIX disk.

DTFS is more reliable and simpler to administer than more traditional UNIX file systems. It employs techniques common to transaction processing systems to ensure that the file system is never left in an inconsistent state. Its dynamic configuration strategies simplify the task of file system creation. In addition, a backup utility included with the product saves file data in its compressed form, so backups require less time and space.

DTFS 2.2 includes a new patent-pending compression algorithm from PLC to provide better compression and higher performance. DTFS 2.2 also employs improved caching strategies and disk access methods to provide a threefold increase in fsck performance. DTFS 2.2 is available for $295.00 for a Client license and $595.00 for a Server license. The Upgrade price from DTFS 2.0 for UnixWare 1.1 is $149.00 for a Client license (540MB) and $299.00 for a Server license (unlimited).

Programmed Logic Announces HTFS 3.0

High performance, 100% UFS media compatible file system now includes multiple access methods

14 February, 1996 (Somerset, NJ) - Programmed Logic Corp (PLC) announced today the third generation of the High Throughput File System, HTFS 3.0. The new release builds on the transaction-caching and intent-logging technology in HTFS by adding the ability to support multiple access methods, such as streamed, compressed, or record-oriented. HTFS will be available March 15th for UnixWare 2.x; Solaris and SVR4MP ports will soon follow.

Multiple access methods allow users the ability to store individual files using the access method that best suits the file type. For example, files not used frequently can be compressed, while frequently written files can be stored using the streamed I/O access method.

"With HTFS 3.0, customers can implement whichever access method solves their needs best, thus improving overall system performance," stated Jeff Helthall, Vice President of Marketing for PLC.

The multiple access method technology provides a degree of flexibility not found in any other file system product. It is now possible to develop an access method specifically designed for a particular storage management need without paying the cost of developing a complete file system.

Third party vendors can develop custom access method using the HTFS internal API (Application Programmers Interface). For example, a database vendor can build a record-oriented access method within a file system framework for improved performance and simpler administration.

HTFS 3.0 is a high-availability file system offering 100% UFS media compatibility and multiple access methods, while providing the highest performance of any logging file system. HTFS 3.0 is available for $1995 (server license) and $495 (client license).

PLC will be occupying booth #2611 at Uniforum '96 in San Francisco, CA from February 14 through February 16. Jeff Helthall will be available to answer any questions or provide additional information on SnapShot.

Programmed Logic Announces SnapShot

Product enables on-line backup per-file, per-directory, or per-file system

5 February, 1996 (Somerset, NJ) - Programmed Logic Corporation (PLC) announced today the release of SnapShot. Available March 15th, SnapShot provides an easy way to backup any file system online, without support from the underlying file system. SnapShot provides online backup by creating a dual view of any file system, consisting of a frozen read-only view and a current, up-to-date writeable view.

"All UNIX computers run multiple file systems," stated Jeff Helthall, Vice President of Marketing for PLC. "SnapShot provides Unix administrators with an online backup engine which will work with all file systems, thus providing incredible ease of use, while dramatically increasing functionality."

SnapShot can be enabled on a per-file, per-directory, or per-file system basis. As a result of SnapShot's ability to store copies of modified files on a server over NFS, the product works well on client systems which have little local disk space. This allows an enterprise's systems to be available and accessible without downtime for backups.

SnapShot works with most popular UNIX backup software products on the market today and enhances those packages by increasing their functionality and providing customers with additional flexibility.

SnapShot is a UNIX file-system module that plugs into PLC's StackFS architecture which is implemented as a layer on top of any existing file system. The product conforms to the Virtual File System interface and supports the SVR4 Application Binary Interface standard. SnapShot is available for $1995 (server license) and $495 (client license).

PLC will be occupying booth #2611 at Uniforum '96 in San Francisco, CA from February 14 through February 16. Jeff Helthall will be available to answer any questions or provide additional information on SnapShot.

Chen Systems Utilizes HTFS

From Programmed Logic

Wins AIM VII Price/Performance Hot Iron Award

19 September, 1995 (Somerset, NJ) - Programmed Logic Corporation (PLC) and Chen Systems (CHEN) announced today the delivery of the High Throughput File System (HTFS) as a key component of CHEN's CS-1000, a high-performance symmetric multiprocessing server. At a news conference held today by AIM Technology at UNIX Expo, the CS-1000 won and was presented with a coveted Hot Iron Award.

PLC develops value-added technology for the UNIX operating system and other related open-systems platforms. Founded in 1990, PLC is a privately held corporation, wholly owned by its key employees.

"As recipients of a Hot Iron Award, CHEN demonstrates the incredible performance that users will now receive from the coupling of our HTFS software with their high-performance systems," said Tim Williams, President of PLC.

Chen Systems' CS-1000 Model 10 won the Best Price/Performance on the AIM VII Shared System Mix, which measures peak demands on system throughput. AIM, a leading independent performance testing service for UNIX systems, will publish this recent result in its Winter 1995 UNIX System Price/Performance Guide.

"HTFS is a key example of our strategy to employ 'best- of-breed' technology in our new CS-1000 enterprise server," said Steve Chen, President and CEO of Chen Systems. "We are very excited about our partnership with PLC and look forward to working closely on future enterprise technologies."

Chen Systems Corporation designs, manufactures, markets, and supports high-performance server products worldwide. The privately held company was founded in 1993 and has headquarters in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as well as sales offices in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. CHEN products incorporate a high-performance parallel architecture and other features found previously only in supercomputers and mainframes. Company products are aimed at large enterprises that require mainframe scalability, service ability, and I/0 throughput for strategic and mission-critical client/server applications.

HTFS, the High Throughput File System, employs transaction-oriented high- performance caching, intent logging, and data checkpointing. HTFS more than doubles the total throughput of UNIX Systems and dramatically increases its reliability and availability by journaling disk updates and performing disk recovery within seconds.

Programmed Logic Announces TeraFile

Premier product enables files of limitless size

18 September, 1995 (Somerset, NJ)- Programmed Logic Corporation (PLC) announced today at UNIX Expo the release of TeraFile. Available immediately, TeraFile breaks the two gigabyte (GB) file-size barrier, enabling files of virtually limitless size.

"TeraFile solves our need to provide users with an extended file system which enables our internal applications the ability to exceed the 2GB file limitation within the 32-bit UNIX operating system" said Gil Colón, a member of the technical architecture and engineering staff at AT&T.

TeraFile provides 64-bit file access for existing 32-bit UNIX operating systems. Files can grow beyond the limitations of the underlying operating system and can be extended in place, without restructuring the file-system partition. Users can now utilize 64-bit files which are actually composed of an unlimited number of separate 32-bit physical extensions, which can be located anywhere on the network.

"This product is a breakthrough for the computer industry," stated Jeff Helthall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for PLC. "TeraFile works using any existing file system and without modification to the underlying operating system."

New applications that take advantage of TeraFile's 64-bit file sizes will find that most existing 32-bit system calls will work without modification. Applications requiring finer control of managed files with 64-bit file offsets can use the included 64-bit API library.

"The API library will implement industry standard system calls which support files greater than two gigabytes," said Tim Williams, President of PLC. "In addition, PLC has included 64-bit versions of standard UNIX commands that are essential for 64-bit files."

TeraFile is a UNIX file-system module that is implemented as a layer on top of any existing file system. The product conforms to the Virtual File System interface and supports the SVR4 Application Binary Interface standard. To the user it looks like any other file system. TeraFile is available immediately for $2995 (server license) and $595 (client license).
